Conversations + Colour: Allie King
Delightfully whimsical, we stepped into the wonderful world of Melbourne-based colour curator and Melbourne-based student, Allie King. Full of joie de vivre, and with a gift for colour play and styling, Allie chatted with us about baking, pop culture and her iconic and instantly recognisable style.
Hi Allie! Can we call you Allie? Tell us about yourself: I am Allie Daisy King! My pronouns are she/her, I am a Cancerian, an ENFJ (extroversion, intuition, feeling and judgement). I am currently undertaking a Masters Degree of Early Childhood Education, working in retail and freelance styling + content creation. I am utterly obsessed with pop culture, cooking, crafting, musicals and fashion.
On a regular day - we’d find you… Probably at uni, multi-tasking + procrastinating by editing visuals and online shopping. After uni, you’ll find me browsing around some cute shops on Gertrude Street. I will either head out for dinner, or I will make something for my family for dinner (usually something from one of Julia Ostro’s cookbooks). At night, I am likely to watch TV, scroll through TikTok and eat ice cream. How would you describe your style? I would describe my style as colourful and playful. It is a bit of a mix between a Japanese toddler and a Scandi grandmother. I love anything in pastel, checks, Hello Kitty motifs, Air Force 1’s, and clothes that look like candy.
When did you fall in love with fashion? I have loved clothes for as long as I can remember. Due to having both of my parents work in creative fields (mum is a stylist and dad works in advertising), I have grown up around colour and fun visuals. I have always been quite eccentric and I find fashion to be an outlet for self-expression and a form of solace.
Best ever purchase? The best thing that I have ever bought is this remarkable lime green vinyl trench coat from Daniel Silfen. I bought it right before I went to Japan in 2020 and I have worn it most days for the past 2.5 years. This shade of green goes with every single thing I own, and it is the perfect winter staple.
You love colour - do you have a favourite? Oh I love every single colour, BUT if I did have to choose it would be either cornflower or pistachio green.
How do you get inspired? I find that TikTok, Pinterest, Instagram and the people in my life are the biggest inspirations to me.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Once a speaker at a school event said this one thing that changed my life - if you do not want to do something, find one thing about it that will make doing it worth it, and make that your focus.
